Abstract
Savonius wind turbines are a type of vertical-axis wind turbine suitable for low wind speed conditions, but they have limitations in power performance due to drag forces acting on the returning blade. One method that can be used to improve turbine performance is the installation of a cylinder as a passive flow control device in front of the returning blade. This study aims to analyze the effect of cylinder distance ratio and Tip Speed Ratio (TSR) variations on Savonius wind turbine performance based on the Coefficient of Power (CoP) and Coefficient of Static Torque (CTs), as well as to analyze the flow characteristics based on velocity contour and pressure contour. The study was conducted using a three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method with ANSYS Fluent 2025 R2. The simulation employed the Realizable k–ε turbulence model with Wall-Enhanced Treatment, the sliding mesh method, and an inlet wind speed of 3 m/s. The cylinder distance ratios were y/D = 0.65, 0.75, 0.85, and 0.95, along with a condition without a cylinder, while the TSR was varied from 0.2 to 1.2. The results showed that the highest CoP was obtained at y/D = 0.75 and TSR = 0.7, with a value of 0.35166, representing a 10.62% increase compared with the condition without a cylinder. The highest maximum CTs was obtained at y/D = 0.75 and an angular position of 130°, with a value of 0.775078, representing a 2.90% increase. The velocity contour results showed that the cylinder affected the velocity distribution and reduced wake formation behind the rotor, while the pressure contour results indicated an increase in the pressure difference between the advancing blade and returning blade. Based on these results, the y/D = 0.75 configuration provided the best performance under the investigated conditions.
