Abstract
This study aims to synthesize silica–carbon (Si–C) composites from coconut coir waste and Dicalite Diatomite using an ion-exchange method and to investigate the effects of gel formation pH and carbonization temperature variations on the characteristics of the resulting composites. Coconut coir was used as a carbon source through the extraction and isolation of humic acid using Dowex cation-exchange resin, while Dicalite Diatomite was used as a silica source through extraction with 2 N sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution. The resulting sodium silicate solution was then mixed with humic acid at varying pH values of 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. The mixtures were allowed to stand for 12–24 hours to form gels, which were subsequently washed, dried at 100 °C, and carbonized at temperatures of 400, 500, 600, 700, and 800 °C. The resulting products were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy–Energy Dispersive X-Ray (SEM-EDX), while the raw materials were analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). The results showed that variations in pH and carbonization temperature affected the structural characteristics and functional groups of the silica–carbon composites. Based on the characterization results, the optimal synthesis conditions were obtained at a gel formation pH of 5 and a carbonization temperature of 800 °C. These conditions exhibited more favorable structural characteristics, with stronger silica–carbon interactions, more pronounced surface modifications, and a balance between material stability and structural ordering. Therefore, coconut coir waste and Dicalite Diatomite have the potential to be utilized as raw materials for synthesizing silica–carbon composites that can be further developed for adsorbent applications. Keywords: humic acid, Dicalite Diatomite, ion exchange, coconut coir, silica–carbon.
