Abstract

Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) waste from the acetylene gas industry, which has a high calcium content (98.71%), has the potential to be utilized as an alternative raw material for the production of calcium nitrate fertilizer. The production process begins by reducing the particle size of the waste to 100 mesh, followed by reacting 40 grams of Ca(OH)₂ with nitric acid (HNO₃) at varying concentrations (1–2 N) and temperatures (50–90°C) for one hour. The resulting solution is filtered, neutralized to pH 7 using 25% NH₄OH, and then crystallized at 150°C until white calcium nitrate crystals are formed. The best results were obtained at a reaction temperature of 70°C and an HNO₃ concentration of 1.5 N, yielding calcium nitrate fertilizer with a calcium (Ca) content of 21.91% and a nitrogen (N) content of 16.74%, which complies with quality standards for calcium nitrate fertilizer. In general, increasing the reaction temperature and HNO₃ concentration tends to increase the calcium and nitrogen content of the resulting fertilizer. This study demonstrates that Ca(OH)₂ waste from the acetylene industry can be effectively utilized as a calcium source for calcium nitrate fertilizer production. Keywords: Calcium hydroxide waste, Calcium nitrate, Fertilizer production, Crystallization.
