Abstract

Soybeans are a strategic food commodity in Indonesia and serve as the primary raw material, particularly for the tofu and tempeh industries. On the other hand, domestic production has not been able to meet national demand, resulting in a supply gap that is filled through imports. This study aims to (1) analyze the level of Indonesia’s dependence on soybean imports, (2) analyze the stage of development of Indonesia’s soybean sector in international trade, and (3) identify the factors influencing the volume of Indonesia’s soybean imports. The study uses secondary data in the form of panel data from 2012 to 2024 for Indonesia and the five main source countries of imports (the United States, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, and Malaysia). The analysis was conducted using the Import Dependency Ratio (IDR), the Trade Specialization Index (ISP), and a panel data gravity regression model. The results show that Indonesia’s average soybean IDR is 80.04 percent, with an upward trend indicating a very high level of import dependency. The average TSI value of −0.99 consistently places Indonesia’s soybean sector in the “introduction” stage, indicating that Indonesia acts as an importer with very low competitiveness. The results of the gravity model regression show that the model has an Adjusted R² of 0.8762. Partially, Indonesia’s GDP per capita, imported soybean prices, and the IDR exchange rate have a significant effect on soybean import volume, while the GDP per capita of the country of origin, economic distance, domestic soybean prices, the exchange rate, and the ISP value do not have a significant effect. The findings indicate that Indonesia’s soybean import volume is related to growth in domestic demand, changes in imported soybean prices, and high dependence on foreign supplies.
