Abstract
This study was conducted on production operators in the Product Management Department of PT Petrokimia Gresik, whose work activities involve lifting and moving materials, bending postures, prolonged standing, and repetitive movements. These conditions pose a potential risk of musculoskeletal disorders and high mental workload. The study aims to analyze the work postures and mental workload levels of production operators using the Ovako Working Posture Analysis System (OWAS) and NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) methods, and to provide improvement recommendations based on the analysis results. Data collection was carried out through observation of work activities, documentation of work postures, and the distribution of NASA-TLX questionnaires to eight production operators. The OWAS method was used to assess posture based on the positions of the back, arms, and legs, as well as the load handled, while NASA-TLX was used to measure mental workload based on six dimensions. The OWAS analysis results indicated that out of eight work activities, five fell into risk category 3—requiring immediate corrective action—and three fell into risk category 2, requiring consideration of improvement measures. Meanwhile, the NASA-TLX results showed that two respondents (25%) fell into the high mental workload category, and six respondents (75%) fell into the very high category. The Physical Demand (PD) dimension had the highest average score, whereas Frustration (FR) had the lowest. Based on the OWAS and NASA-TLX analysis results, improvement recommendations include correcting work postures for each activity, establishing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the solid bio-fertilizer and liquid bio-fertilizer plants, and proposing the use of handling aids—specifically a forklift for the solid bio-fertilizer plant and a drum stacker for the liquid bio-fertilizer plant.
