Abstract

Red onions (Allium ascalonicum L.) are an important crop whose productivity needs to be improved. This study aimed to examine the effects of mulch type and NPK Grower fertilizer application rates, as well as their interaction, on the growth and yield of the Bauji variety of red onions. The study was conducted at the Porong Subdistrict Agricultural Extension Center (BPP) in Sidoarjo from August to September 2025. A factorial randomized block design (RBD) with two factors was used. The first factor was mulch type (no mulch, rice straw, rice husks, and dry leaves), and the second factor was the NPK Grower application rate (0, 15, and 30 g/plot). The parameters observed included vegetative growth and yield components. A significant interaction between mulch type and NPK Grower dose for most growth and yield parameters. The best treatment combination was rice straw mulch with a 30 g/plot dose of NPK Grower, which consistently produced the highest values for leaf number and various yield components, such as fresh weight and dry weight of bunches. The combination of rice straw mulch and 30 g/plot of NPK Grower was effective in enhancing the growth and yield of the Bauji onion variety. This positive interaction occurred because rice straw mulch created optimal soil conditions, thereby making nutrient uptake from the NPK Grower fertilizer more efficient
