Abstract

Utilizing organic waste as a renewable energy feedstock offers an alternative for mitigating environmental issues while generating valuable products. This study aimed to analyze the effect of varying compositions of food waste and food industry sludge on bioethanol production, evaluate the effectiveness of 3A zeolite and silica gel in the bioethanol dehydration process, and determine the optimal treatment combination based on the characteristics of the resulting bioethanol. The study employed food waste-to-sludge composition ratios of 100:0%, 80:20%, 65:35%, 50:50%, and 0:100%. Fermentation was conducted using Saccharomyces cerevisiae at 30°C for 5 days, followed by distillation at 40°C and a pressure of 175 mbar. The distilled bioethanol was subsequently dehydrated using 60 g of 3A zeolite and 70 g of silica gel, with an adsorbent bed height of 15 cm. The results indicated that increasing the proportion of food waste led to higher ethanol concentrations. The highest pre-dehydration ethanol concentration (91.5%) was achieved with the 100% food waste composition, while the lowest (77%) was obtained with 100% sludge. 3A zeolite demonstrated superior dehydration effectiveness compared to silica gel, increasing ethanol concentration by 3.90 - 4.92% and 1.19 - 3.25%, respectively. The optimal combination was 100% food waste with 3A zeolite, yielding an ethanol concentration of 96%, a water content of 0.808% (v/v), and a density of 0.792 g/mL. Most quality parameters met the SNI 7390:2012 standards; however, the water content (0.808%) and octane number (RON 92) did not yet comply with the established limits. Research results indicate that the combination of food waste and 3A zeolite has the potential to produce higher quality bioethanol and supports the utilization of organic waste as an alternative energy source. Keywords : food waste, food industry sludge, bioethanol, 3A zeolite, silica gel
