Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems are coastal environments that play a significant role in climate change mitigation due to their ability to store carbon and absorb carbon dioxide (CO2). However, increasing transportation activities in coastal areas contribute to rising CO2 emissions. This study aims to analyze CO2 emissions from the transportation sector and the carbon sequestration capacity of mangrove ecosystems in order to assess the carbon balance in Galis District, Pamekasan Regency. The research was conducted in October 2025 using a field survey method. CO2 emissions were estimated based on vehicle counts, fuel consumption, and emission factors referring to the IPCC 2006 Guidelines. Mangrove analysis was carried out using 20 × 20 m plots at three sampling points, where tree diameter at breast height (DBH) was measured and biomass was calculated using non – destructive allometric equations. Carbon stock was derived from biomass, while CO2 sequestration was estimated using a conversion factor of 3.67. The results show that CO2 emissions from the transportation sector in Galis District reached an average of 1,978.33 tons/year, with the highest contribution from passenger cars and heavy-duty vehicles. Meanwhile, mangrove ecosystems demonstrated carbon sequestration capacities ranging from 3.282,49 to 6.756,52 tons CO2/ha/year, with a total sequestration of 14,131.85 tons CO2/ha/year based on aboveground biomass. These findings indicate that mangrove ecosystems function as a carbon sink that can partially offset emissions generated by transportation activities. Therefore, sustainable mangrove management and rehabilitation, along with transportation emission control, are essential as a blue carbon strategy to support climate change mitigation in coastal areas.
