Abstract

Bittern waste from salt production contains high magnesium (Mg) concentrations, making it a potential magnesium source for struvite (MgNH₄PO₄·6H₂O) crystallization. This study aims to investigate the effects of seed material type, flow velocity, and reaction time on struvite crystallization using a Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR). Silica sand and zeolite were used as seed materials. The analyzed parameters included magnesium removal efficiency, crystal mass production, and crystal characteristics using SEM-EDX and XRD analyses. The results showed that seed material type, flow velocity, and reaction time significantly influenced struvite crystallization. Zeolite produced the best performance with 84.5% magnesium removal efficiency and the highest crystal mass production of 41 grams under optimum operating conditions. Characterization results confirmed the presence of struvite-forming elements and diffraction patterns consistent with standard struvite. This study demonstrates that bittern waste utilization through FBR technology has potential as an alternative approach for waste treatment and valuable resource recovery.
