Abstract

Groundwater in Kebomas Sub-district, Gresik Regency, is affected by high concentrations of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn), as well as low levels of dissolved oxygen (DO). These conditions highlight the need for treatment to improve groundwater quality. This study aims to analyse the effect of variations in draft tube density on hydrodynamic characteristics, oxygen mass transfer, and the removal of Fe and Mn using a continuously operated laboratory-scale airlift reactor (ALR). The study was conducted through experiments and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling, with draft tube densities of 0 mm, 3 mm and 5 mm. The water flow rate was 1 L/minute, the air flow rate was 7.5 L/minute, the diffuser diameter was 8 cm, and the process duration was 30 minutes. The results of the study showed that the initial groundwater had an Fe concentration of 0.36 mg/L, a Mn concentration of 0.61 mg/L, and a DO concentration of 3.4 mg/L. The 5-mm draft tube provided the best performance, with a final Fe concentration of 0.0124 mg/L and a removal efficiency of 96.56%, a final Mn concentration of 0.0850 mg/L and a removal efficiency of 86.07%, and a DO value of 6.8 mg/L. The volumetric oxygen mass transfer coefficient (kLa) also increased from 0.0406 min⁻¹ at a 0 mm variation to 0.0486 min⁻¹ at a 5 mm variation. Thus, a 5 mm variation in draft tube density represents the most optimal condition for enhancing oxygen transfer and removing Fe and Mn in the ALR system.
