Abstract

Batik is a form of culture that combines elements of motif art or decorative variety with color art through the stages of dyeing and coloring. Batik production activities produce liquid waste that contains synthetic dyes, TSS, and COD in high concentrations so that it has the potential to cause pollution if discharged directly into water bodies. This condition requires the implementation of effective waste treatment and still paying attention to environmental aspects. This research aims to determine the efficiency of electrocoagulation combination as a pre-treatment and Photo-Fenton as a follow-up treatment in lowering TSS, COD, and color parameters in batik industrial waste. The electrocoagulation process is carried out using an aluminum electrode with a strong current of 3 A and a variation of contact time of 20–60 minutes, then continued with an advanced oxidation process (AOPs) using UV-C light that produces hydroxyl radicals (OH) to degrade organic pollutants. The research results show that the application of electrocoagulation followed by Photo-Fenton provides high elimination efficiency against polluting parameters. The optimal condition produces TSS allowance efficiency of 95%, COD of 90%, and color of 94%.
