Abstract

Restaurant wastewater contains relatively high levels of pollutants, particularly oils and fats, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and surfactants; therefore, effective treatment is required before it is discharged into the environment. This study aims to determine the effect of microbubble size and coagulant type on the performance of a simple Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system, as well as to determine the effect of zeolite media size on surfactant removal in restaurant wastewater. The study was conducted using a simple DAF system integrated with zeolite adsorption. The experimental variables included microbubble sizes of 0.1 mm and 0.2 mm; coagulant types of PAC, FeCl₃, and HCA; and zeolite media sizes of 0.8 mm, 1.4 mm, and 2.3 mm. The parameters analyzed included COD, TSS, oils and fats, and surfactants (MBAS). The data were analyzed using ANOVA and multiresponse optimization with the Response Optimizer in Minitab. The results showed that a microbubble size of 0.1 mm provided higher removal efficiency compared to 0.2 mm. PAC achieved the highest removal efficiency for COD at 95.2% and TSS at 87.8%, while FeCl₃ provided the highest removal efficiency for oils and fats at 92.3%. Microbubble size and zeolite size significantly influenced surfactant removal, with the highest efficiency 96.02% achieved with the combination of 0.1 mm microbubbles and 0.8 mm zeolite. The results of the multi-response optimization indicated that the best treatment combination was 0.1 mm microbubbles, PAC coagulant, and 0.8 mm zeolite, with predicted removal rates of 97.22% for COD, 91.14% for TSS, 97.69% for oils and fats, and 97.11% for MBAS, with a desirability value of 0.8049. Thus, the integration of a simple DAF system using microbubbles with zeolite coagulation and adsorption has the potential to improve the removal of various pollutant parameters in restaurant wastewater.
