Abstract
Batik industrial wastewater contains organic matter, suspended solids, dyes, and inorganic elements that may potentially pollute the environment if not properly treated. This study aimed to analyze the performance of an integrated TiO₂ photocatalysis, aerobic biofilter, and zeolite adsorption system for reducing COD, TSS, color, and Ca in batik industrial wastewater. The treatment began with 1-hour sedimentation as a pretreatment, followed by photocatalysis using RIPT and stainless-steel mesh immobilization media with irradiation times of 60, 90, and 120 minutes, followed by 30-minute sedimentation. The best photocatalytic condition was subsequently used as the influent for an aerobic biofilter with HRTs of 48 and 72 hours, followed by 30-minute zeolite adsorption as a polishing treatment. The results showed that the best photocatalytic condition was obtained using RIPT with 90-minute irradiation. The photocatalysis and sedimentation stage achieved removals of 45% COD, 89.7% TSS, 62.9% Ca, and 31.6% color. At an aerobic biofilter HRT of 72 hours, COD removal reached 71.8%, TSS 41%, and Ca 30.8%, while color increased by 3.1%. Subsequently, zeolite adsorption achieved removals of 74.2% COD, 73.9% TSS, 88.9% Ca, and 56.3% color. Overall, the integrated treatment system was able to produce effluent that complied with the applicable quality standards for COD, TSS, and color. However, the performance of the photocatalytic process itself was not optimal, as a more effective pretreatment is required to reduce turbidity before the wastewater is treated using photocatalysis.
