Abstract

This study analyzes the factors influencing the continuance use intention of mobile gacha game players using the Expectation Confirmation Model (ECM) framework with player satisfaction as a mediating variable. It aims to address high user churn rates by extending the ECM with pre-adoption expectation as an explicit antecedent. Data were collected via questionnaires from 146 active players in the @arknightsfess Twitter community and analyzed using PLS-SEM on SmartPLS 4. The results show that expectation significantly affects confirmation, satisfaction, and continuance intention. Confirmation strongly drives perceived usefulness and satisfaction. Perceived usefulness serves as the primary and most dominant direct driver of continuance use intention. Conversely, satisfaction does not exhibit a statistically significant direct or mediating effect on continuance use intention at the 5% level (P>0.05), highlighting that player retention is governed primarily by cognitive and strategic problem-solving utility rather than transient emotional satisfaction. These findings extend ECM applicability to the digital entertainment industry and provide practical insights for game developers in designing effective user retention strategies.
