Abstract

The batik industry is a major contributor to the national economy, but its production process generates liquid waste that can pollute the environment. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of combining the ozonation process with glass marble filling and HCl-activated zeolite adsorbent in reducing pollutant levels in batik waste. The research used a batch system with packing heights of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 cm, an adsorbent mass of 400 g, and a contact time of 20–40 minutes. Natural zeolite with a 60-mesh size was activated with a 2 M HCl solution and then dried to increase its adsorption capacity. The ozonation process produces hydroxyl radicals (·OH) that can decompose complex organic compounds, while the activated zeolite absorbs pollutant residues. Zeolite activation increased the specific surface area from 213.470 m²/g to 237.722 m²/g. SEM-EDX results showed that HCl effectively reduced impurities, increased the relative purity of aluminosilicate, and improved the surface characteristics of zeolite, consistent with the morphological changes observed in SEM. FTIR analysis revealed shifts in absorption bands at 3400–3600 cm⁻¹, 1650 cm⁻¹, and 1000–1100 cm⁻¹, indicating interactions between –OH, C=O, and Si–O–Si groups with organic waste compounds. Zeolite with a packing system showed a greater decrease in transmittance than zeolite without packing. Optimal results were obtained with a packing volume of 25 cm and a contact time of 40 minutes, achieving reductions of 93.39% in TDS, 99.98% in TSS, and 98% in dye. Calculations showed that the Langmuir adsorption isothermal model had an optimum R² value of 0.9998. The combination of ozonation and activated zeolite increased degradation efficiency by extending contact time and enhancing mass transfer.
