Abstract
This study aims to experimentally evaluate the effects of coolant type, glycol–distilled water mixture ratio, and engine speed on the thermal performance of a radiator in a Honda City 1.5 L i-DSI M/T. The coolants investigated included ethylene glycol–distilled water (EG-A) and propylene glycol–distilled water (PG-A) mixtures at volume concentrations of 30% and 50%, with Prestone Coolant (PC) used as a commercial coolant for comparison. The experiments were conducted under static, no-load vehicle conditions at engine speeds ranging from 600 to 2000 RPM. The thermal performance of the radiator was evaluated based on the actual heat transfer rate, overall heat transfer coefficient, and radiator effectiveness. The results showed that increasing the ethylene glycol concentration from 30% to 50% decreased the thermal performance of the radiator. Furthermore, increasing the engine speed from 600 to 2000 RPM increased the average actual heat transfer rate, overall heat transfer coefficient, and radiator effectiveness by 28.8%, 29.3%, and 26.8%, respectively. Prestone Coolant (PC) exhibited the best overall thermal performance among the tested coolants. Compared with PC, the EG-A mixtures showed average decreases of 1.7%, 4.3%, and 2.8% in the actual heat transfer rate, overall heat transfer coefficient, and radiator effectiveness, respectively. Meanwhile, the PG-A mixtures showed greater average decreases of 6.8%, 11.9%, and 7.8%, respectively.
