Abstract
Urban organic matter and microplastic inputs may affect the Jagir River’s oxygen balance and natural recovery capacity. This study aimed to identify dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and microplastics; analyse their relationships; and assess the river’s self-purification capacity using Qual2Kw. Samples were collected from six river sites and six domestic wastewater sources along a 12,50 km reach. Relationships among parameters were evaluated using Pearson correlation. The modelling comprised existing conditions, a 25% increase in discharge (Scenario 1), and a 75% reduction in DOC and microplastics from pollution sources together with BOD reduction to 12 mg/L (Scenario 2). River-water DOC, DO, BOD, and microplastic concentrations ranged from 8,20–22,13 mg/L, 4,70–5,90 mg/L, 10–24 mg/L, and 28,000–52,000 particles/m³, respectively. Only the DOC–BOD relationship was significant, showing a strong positive correlation (r = 0,835; p = 0,039). Under existing conditions, DO decreased from 5,90 to 4,18 mg/L without downstream recovery, while BOD reached a maximum of 21,03 mg/L. Scenario 1 increased the minimum DO to 4,47 mg/L and reduced downstream BOD to 19,31 mg/L but did not establish a recovery zone. Scenario 2 produced the best result, with a minimum DO of 5,01 mg/L that subsequently increased to 5,15 mg/L downstream, while BOD decreased from 15.00 to 13,46 mg/L. A 6,70 km recovery zone was observed, although recovery remained partial. Therefore, pollution-source control was more effective than increasing discharge alone and should be combined with upstream load control.
