Abstract
Bittern, the magnesium rich byproduct of salt crystallization, presents a valuable resource for synthesizing high purity industrial compounds. This study explores the synthesis and structural characterization of magnesium chloride (MgCl2) extracted from bittern using a calcination assisted precipitation approach. Magnesium hydroxide Mg(OH)2 was initially precipitated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), subsequently reacted with varying concentrations of hydrochloric acid (HCl 1N –5N), and calcined at elevated temperatures (350°C , 450°C, and 550°C). X-ray Diffraction XRD analysis confirmed the successful formation of hexagonal MgCl2 crystals, alongside minor secondary phases of MgO , NaCl, and trace chlorides, with NaCl exhibiting the most prominent diffraction peaks. Experimental observations revealed that higher thermal energy and acid strength significantly enhanced product recovery and structural regularity. Maximum crystallinity and the highest yield (80.07%) were achieved under optimal operating conditions of 4N HCl and calcination at 550°C. Increasing acid concentration beyond 4N yielded no further improvements, indicating an efficiency threshold. These findings demonstrate that optimizing calcination temperature and acid stoichiometry offers an effective path for transforming industrial bittern waste into high-value functional materials.
