Abstract

Bittern is a liquid waste byproduct of salt production that still contains valuable minerals, one of which is magnesium. One of the derivative products that can be obtained is magnesium chloride (MgCl₂) through a process of precipitation and calcination. In this study, MgCl₂ was synthesized from bittern using a calcination method involving several stages: precipitation of Mg(OH)₂ using NaOH, washing of the precipitate, and subsequent reaction with HCl at varying concentrations of 1N, 2N, 3N, 4N, and 5N. The reaction products were then calcined at temperatures of 350°C, 400°C, 450°C, 500°C, and 450°C. Analysis was performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that variations in HCl concentration and calcination temperature affected the product yield. Regarding the effect of temperature, the highest crystallinity was achieved at 550°C compared to 350°C and 450°C. Meanwhile, based on variations in HCl concentration at 550°C, the optimal conditions were obtained at a concentration of 4N. Based on the peak intensities shown in the X-ray diffraction (XRD) test results, it was determined that the crystal form of MgCl₂ is hexagonal.
