Abstract

Disodium Phosphate Heptahydrate (Na₂HPO₄·7H₂O) is an important inorganic compound widely used in various industrial sectors such as food, pharmaceuticals, detergents, textiles, and water treatment. In the food industry, disodium phosphate heptahydrate functions as an emulsifier, pH regulator, and metal ion chelator to prevent changes in color and flavor. In the pharmaceutical industry, this compound is used as a buffer in injection solutions and as a component in oral formulations. National demand for this compound is showing a significant upward trend, in line with the growth of the downstream industrial sector and the increasing demand for safe, effective, and cost-efficient chemical additives. Therefore, the opportunity to establish a disodium phosphate heptahydrate plant in Indonesia is quite significant. The plant is scheduled to be operational in 2029 with a production capacity of 40,000 metric tons per year, located in the Java Integrated Industrial Park and Estate (JIIPE) in Gresik Regency, East Java. The plant will operate 330 days ayear and employ 219 people. Disodium phosphate heptahydrate is produced through a crystallization process using sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid as raw materials. Sodium hydroxide is sourced from PT. Asahimas Chemical (ASC) in crystalline form, while phosphoric acid is sourced from PT. Petrokimia Gresik in liquid form. The sodium hydroxide crystals are first dissolved in a dissolution tank by adding process water. The sodium hydroxide solution is then reacted with phosphoric acid at a 2:1 ratio in a reactor at 85°C to form disodium phosphate. The disodium phosphate solution is then evaporated to reach a saturated state. The disodium phosphate solution, once saturated, is then crystallized to form disodium phosphate crystals. The temperature of the crystallizer is maintained at room temperature (30°C) to form the heptahydrate. The product of the crystallization process is then separated from the mother liquor using a centrifuge. The mother liquor, which still contains disodium phosphate, is then recycled to the evaporator to reach a saturated state. The disodium phosphate heptahydrate crystals are then dried using a rotary dryer and subsequently cooled using a cooling screw conveyor. The product is then packaged in bags and stored in a warehouse before being distributed to consumers.
