Abstract
Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol that has various applications in several industries, such as pharmaceuticals, paint, and coatings. The demand for benzyl alcohol in these industrial sectors is high, and dependence on foreign supplies has caused the demand for this compound to increase over the years. Therefore, the establishment of a benzyl alcohol plant in Indonesia has a considerable opportunity to meet domestic demand. This benzyl alcohol plant is planned to be established in 2030 with a production capacity of 45,000 tons/year, located in the Manyar Sidorukun area, Manyar District, Gresik Regency, East Java. The plant will operate for 330 days per year with a total workforce of 238 employees. Benzyl alcohol is produced through a hydrolysis process using benzyl chloride and sodium carbonate as raw materials. Before entering the reactor, the temperature of benzyl chloride is first increased to 190°C using a heater, while sodium carbonate is first dissolved in a mixer to a concentration of 10% and subsequently heated to 190°C using a heater. Both streams are then fed into a shell-and-tube reactor operating at a temperature of 190°C and a pressure of 17 atm. The hydrolysis reaction occurring in the reactor is exothermic; therefore, cooling water needs to be added to maintain the operating conditions. Subsequently, benzyl alcohol is purified through a separation process using a flash drum and decanter. The flash drum functions to separate the solution from CO₂ gas produced as a by-product of the reaction. The separated CO₂ is collected and has commercial value. In the decanter, separation occurs based on specific gravity or density, resulting in a benzyl alcohol yield of 99.6%.
