Abstract
The barometric condenser is a critical component in maintaining stable vacuum conditions within the sugar evaporation system. Accurate estimation of cooling water demand and barometric leg height is necessary to ensure reliable operation and to support process optimization. This study develops a MATLAB-based simulation to calculate the cooling water requirement and determine the barometric leg height using actual operating data from sugar industry. The simulation integrates fundamental heat-transfer equations, steam properties, cooling water temperature profiles, and hydrostatic pressure relationships. The results show that the required cooling water mass flow rate is 2060.20 kg/s with a corresponding volumetric flow rate of 7416.73 m³/h, while the estimated barometric leg height is 8.18 m. When compared with actual plant data, the simulation produced error values between 1.42% and 1.66%, which fall well within the “highly reliable” range according to established simulation validation criteria. These findings confirm that the MATLAB model provides an accurate representation of condenser performance and can be used as a dependable tool for operational assessment, sensitivity analysis, and preliminary design evaluation in sugar processing facilities.
