Abstract

Yeast mud is a solid byproduct of the bioethanol fermentation industry that is produced in large quantities, has a high moisture content, and is rich in organic matter, making it a potential feedstock for biochar. This study examines the effect of carbonization temperature and time on the yield and quality of biochar from bioethanol yeast mud. The yeast mud was dried at 100°C for 8 hours, then carbonized in a furnace at 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600°C with holding times of 1; 1.5; 2; 2.5; and 3 hours. The biochar was characterized by yield, ash content, chemical composition (SEM-EDX), and functional groups (FTIR). The yield decreased from 90.86% (200°C, 1 hour) to 20.46% (600°C, 3 hours), while ash content rose from 45.5% to 75.22% as temperature increased. Carbon content fell from 14.25% to 2.07%, whereas mineral elements (Ca, S, K, P) became more concentrated due to organic matter volatilization. FTIR confirmed the loss of O-H and aliphatic C-H groups and the formation of condensed aromatic structures, while SEM showed greater pore development. Biochar carbonized at 200°C showed the best quality, indicating its potential for soil amendment applications.
