Abstract

The increasing demand for monopotassium phosphate as a material used in the fertilizer, agricultural, food, and other chemical industries encourages the establishment of a monopotassium phosphate plant in Indonesia. The domestic demand for monopotassium phosphate is still largely fulfilled through imports; therefore, the establishment of this plant is expected to reduce import dependence and fulfill domestic demand. The production of monopotassium phosphate can be carried out through crystallization and spray drying processes. Based on the process selection, the neutralization process using 90% potassium hydroxide (KOH) and 85% phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄), followed by a spray dryer, was selected because it offers relatively mild operating conditions, a shorter reaction time, high conversion, and simpler process and equipment requirements. The plant is designed with a production capacity of 50,000 tons/year and operates for 330 days per year. The production process is designed by considering ease of operation, raw material availability, and process efficiency to produce monopotassium phosphate according to the required specifications. The plant is planned to be located in the JIIPE Industrial Estate, Gresik, East Java, and will operate as a Limited Liability Company (PT) with a Line and Staff organizational structure. The plant will employ 166 workers. The required utilities consist of 3,709.35 m³/day of water, 28,150.37 lb/day of steam, and 632 kWh of electricity from the national grid (PLN). Based on the economic analysis, the required Fixed Capital Investment is Rp649,788,105,061, while the Working Capital Investment is Rp273,643,862,769. The Total Production Cost is estimated at Rp1,094,575,451,074. The economic feasibility analysis results in a Return on Investment (ROI) of 25.5%, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 22.1%, and a Payback Period (PBP) of 3 years and 1 month. The Break-Even Point (BEP) is estimated at 30.73%. Therefore, based on the technical, economic, and management aspects, the preliminary design of the monopotassium phosphate plant with a production capacity of 50,000 tons/year is considered feasible to be established and operated. The plant is expected to fulfill domestic demand for monopotassium phosphate and provide economic benefits through an appropriate production process, plant location, utility system, and organizational management.
