Abstract
The design of a styrene production plant from ethylbenzene through a dehydrogenation process is proposed to meet the continuously increasing demand for styrene in Indonesia, driven by the development of the petrochemical industry. The plant is designed with a production capacity of 160,000 tons per year. Styrene is one of the important raw materials in the petrochemical industry and is widely used in the production of various polymers and copolymers, such as polystyrene (PS), expandable polystyrene (EPS), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), styrene-butadiene latex (SBL), and unsaturated polyester resin (UPR). These products are extensively utilized in the packaging, construction, automotive, electronics, household appliance, tire, and composite industries. In brief, the styrene production process begins with the mixing of fresh ethylbenzene feed and the recycle stream, followed by gradual heating using heat exchangers and a furnace until the reaction temperature of 625°C is reached. The feed is subsequently mixed with steam and reacted in a Fe₂O₃-catalyzed multitube fixed-bed reactor, producing styrene along with by-products consisting of hydrogen, benzene, toluene, ethylene, methane, carbon dioxide, and unreacted ethylbenzene. The reactor effluent is then cooled and separated in a three-phase separator to separate the gas, liquid hydrocarbon, and water phases. The hydrocarbon mixture is subsequently purified through three stages of distillation: separation of benzene and toluene as by-products, separation of ethylbenzene for recycling to the reactor, and separation of styrene as the main product, which is subsequently transferred to the storage tank.
