Abstract
The Buntung River in Sidoarjo Regency is one of the areas with potential flood risk; therefore, hydrological analysis is required to estimate the design flood discharge as a basis for flood control planning. This study aims to determine the design rainfall, analyze the design flood discharge using HEC-HMS, and compare the modeling results with manual calculations using the Snyder, SCS, and Nakayasu Synthetic Unit Hydrograph (SUH) methods. The analysis uses annual maximum daily rainfall data for the 2015–2025 period from 13 rainfall stations. Areal rainfall was calculated using the Thiessen Polygon method, while design rainfall was determined through frequency analysis using the Log Pearson Type III distribution. The hourly rainfall distribution was determined using the Alternating Block Method (ABM). HEC-HMS modeling was conducted by applying the Snyder, SCS, and User-Specified Unit Hydrograph (Nakayasu) transformation methods. The results show that design rainfall increases with increasing return period, with values of 75 mm, 98 mm, 110 mm, 121 mm, 128 mm, and 134 mm for return periods of 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years, respectively. The HEC-HMS modeling results also show an increase in peak discharge with increasing return period. The User-Specified Unit Hydrograph (Nakayasu) method produces the highest peak discharge, while the SCS Unit Hydrograph method produces the lowest peak discharge. Based on the comparison with manual calculations, the User-Specified Unit Hydrograph (Nakayasu) method produces the smallest average difference of 0.1%, followed by the SCS Unit Hydrograph at 118.1% and the Snyder Unit Hydrograph at 250.2%. Based on the percentage difference from the manual calculations, the Nakayasu method shows the highest level of agreement in this study.
