Abstract

m-Aminophenol is an important chemical intermediate that is widely utilized in the pharmaceutical,dye, and chemicl industries. The increasing demand for m-aminophenol driven by industrial development highlights the need to establish domestic production facilities to reduce reliance on imports. This final project presents the preliminary design of an m-aminophenol plant with a production capacity of 60,000 tons per year, utilizing a substitution reaction between resorcinol solution and ammonia gas in a continuous stirred tank reactor. The overall production process comprises raw material preparation, reaction, product separation, purification, crystallization, drying, and packaging. Technical and economic feasibility assessments were conducted through material and energy balance calculations, process equipment design, utility requirement estimation, and economic analysis. The proposed plant is planned to be located in Ngipik, Gresik Regency, East Java, and is designed for continuous operation for 330 days per year. The economic evaluation resulted in a post-tax Return on Investment (ROI) of 20.90%, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 16.357%, a Payback Period (PBP) of 3 years and 1 month, and a Break-Even Point (BEP) of 31.66%. Based on these technical and economic parameters, the proposed m-aminophenol plant is considered technically feasible and economically viable for industrial development.
