Abstract
The acetylene gas industry produces solid waste in the form of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂), which is included in the category of B3 waste (Hazardous and Toxic Substances). However, the high calcium content in waste can serve as an alternative source for synthesizing value-added calcium oxide (CaO). This study aims to evaluate the effects of variations in pH and sintering temperature on the CaO characteristics of waste Ca(OH)₂ generated during acetylene production. The synthesis process was carried out by precipitation at pH 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14, followed by sintering at 550 °C, 650 °C, 750 °C, 850 °C, and 950 °C. Characterization includes yield analysis, determination of calcium levels using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (SSA), and morphological observation with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results showed that increasing pH increased CaO yield. Meanwhile, increasing the sintering temperature increased the calcium content by more effectively decomposing Ca(OH)₂ into CaO. Optimum conditions were obtained at pH 14 and 950 °C, with a calcium content of 69.22%. The size of the formed CaO particles was 140.5 nm, which is still above the standard range for nanoparticles (1–100 nm) according to ISO 80004-1:2023. These findings suggest that waste Ca(OH)₂ from acetylene gas production can be used as a raw material for CaO, although further optimization is needed to produce nanoscale CaO.
