Abstract
Museums serve not only as institutions for preserving historical artifacts but also as cultural spaces that construct and represent the identity of a community. The 10 November Museum in Surabaya plays a strategic role in preserving the historical memory of the Battle of Surabaya while simultaneously representing the city's local cultural identity. This study aims to examine how the local cultural identity of Surabaya is represented through the museum's historical narratives, collections, symbols, language, and visitors' experiences. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed in this research. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with museum management and visitors, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, guided by Stuart Hall's Theory of Representation and Laurajane Smith's concept of cultural heritage and identity. The findings reveal that the 10 November Museum represents Surabaya's local cultural identity through narratives of heroism, the values embodied by the Arek Suroboyo character such as courage, solidarity, and resilience the city's multicultural social composition, the use of the Suroboyoan dialect, and the museum's role as a medium for cultural education. However, the representation is predominantly centered on the national narrative of heroism, while the everyday cultural practices and socio-cultural diversity of Surabaya receive comparatively less attention. Therefore, the museum has significant potential to strengthen its role in preserving and communicating local cultural identity by presenting a more balanced representation between historical heroism and the broader cultural dimensions of Surabaya.
