Abstract

Soil health plays a fundamental role in sustaining agricultural systems by maintaining the physical, chemical, and biological functions of soil. Continuous land-use intensification within the Bangsal Sub-Watershed has increased pressure on soil resources, highlighting the need for comprehensive soil health assessment to support sustainable land management. This study aimed to evaluate soil health from an ecological perspective, examine its relationship with vegetation conditions using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and identify the priority socio-cultural and economic factors influencing sustainable agriculture. The research was conducted across five dominant land-use types, namely forest, plantation, dryland farming, paddy field, and shrubland. Soil samples were collected using a purposive sampling approach. Soil health was assessed using the Soil Quality Index based on ten indicators, including effective soil depth, texture, bulk density, drainage, soil pH, cation exchange capacity, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium, and soil organic carbon. Differences among land-use types were evaluated using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), while socio-cultural and economic priorities were determined using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). The results indicated that SQI values ranged from 2.82 to 4.32, with the highest soil health observed in plantation land (KB3) and the lowest in shrubland (SW1). Soil organic carbon was identified as the most influential indicator contributing to the overall soil health index. NDVI values generally exhibited a positive relationship with soil health across several land-use types. The AHP analysis demonstrated that sustainable agriculture is influenced not only by ecological conditions but also by socio-cultural and economic priorities of local farming communities. Integrating ecological, socio-cultural, and economic dimensions provides a more comprehensive basis for developing sustainable agricultural management strategies within the Bangsal Sub-Watershed.
