Abstract
Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication that occurs after 20 weeks of gestation and can progress to a severe condition if not detected properly. This study aims to design and develop a web-based expert system application to assist in the detection of preeclampsia and severe preeclampsia based on clinical and laboratory examination data. System development followed an adapted Expert System Development Life Cycle (ESDLC), limited to the assessment, knowledge acquisition, design, and testing phases. During the design phase, the ICONIX Process was used to create a GUI storyboard, domain model, use case model, robustness diagram, sequence diagram, class diagram, and database design. Expert knowledge is represented as rules along with Measure of Belief and Measure of Disbelief values, which are then processed using the Certainty Factor method to generate detection results in the form of “No Preeclampsia Indicated,” “Preeclampsia,” or “Severe Preeclampsia,” along with certainty values and explanations of the active rules. The application was built using Python Flask and MySQL, with admin and nurse user roles. Black-box testing showed that the system’s main functions performed as expected. Testing on 30 expert-labeled scenarios revealed that the system’s results matched the expert labels in 25 scenarios, while the results in the other 5 scenarios differed from the expert labels. Based on this comparison, an accuracy of 83.33% was achieved.
