Abstract

Agriculture plays a vital role in the economy of Timor-Leste, where the majority of the population depends on farming for their livelihood. Shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.) cultivation is one of the important agricultural activities; however, its productivity is often constrained by high pest and disease intensity, which affects production costs and farmers’ income. This study aims to analyze the effect of pest and disease control techniques on the efficiency of shallot farming in the local agricultural areas of Timor-Leste. This research employed a quantitative approach using primary data collected through surveys, structured interviews, and questionnaires involving a sample of 10 farmers and 40 shallot respondents. Farming efficiency was analyzed using multiple linear regression with the support of SPSS version 22. The independent variables include chemical, biological, mechanical/physical, and integrated pest control techniques, while farming efficiency serves as the dependent variable. The results show that all pest and disease control techniques are economically feasible, as indicated by an R/C ratio greater than 1. The integrated control technique demonstrates the highest efficiency (R/C = 1.94), followed by chemical (1.85), biological (1.80), and mechanical/physical control (1.78), indicating that integrated approaches provide greater economic benefits while maintaining sustainability. Furthermore, the regression analysis reveals that pest and disease control variables simultaneously have a significant effect on farming efficiency, as confirmed by the F-test (Sig. = 0.038 < 0.05). The coefficient of determination (R² = 0.690) indicates that 69% of the variation in farming efficiency is explained by the four control techniques, while the correlation coefficient (R = 0.831) shows a strong relationship between the variables. The partial t-test results indicate that all variables significantly influence farming efficiency, with biological control showing the strongest effect (t = 6.715). These findings suggest that the application of appropriate pest and disease control techniques, particularly integrated and biological approaches, can significantly improve farming efficiency, increase farmers’ income, and support sustainable shallot production systems.
