Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the effects of Paenibacillus polymyxa application and rice variety mixtures on the infestation of Brown Planthopper (BPH) and rice yield. The research was conducted during the 2025 dry season in Madiun Regency, Indonesia, covering Kuwu Village (endemic area) and Klumutan Village (non-endemic area). A factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with two factors and three replications was employed. The factors consisted of seed treatment without soaking (P0) and seed soaking with Paenibacillus polymyxa ( P1), and four mixture compositions of the rice varieties Ciherang, Mekongga, and Sintanur: K1 (1:1:1), K2 (1:2:1), K3 (1:1:2), and K4 (2:1:1). Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at the 5% significance level. The results showed a significant interaction between Paenibacillus polymyxa application and variety mixtures on BPH population at 21 days after transplanting (DAT) in the non-endemic area, with the P1K1 combination providing the best suppression. Independently, the application of Paenibacillus polymyxa significantly reduced the brown planthopper population at 21 DAT and the damage intensity at 63 DAT, whereas varietal mixing did not produce a significant effect.. The treatments did not significantly affect rice yield; however, Paenibacillus polymyxa application tended to increase grain yield and 1,000-grain weight in the endemic area. These findings indicate that Paenibacillus polymyxa has potential as a biological control agent against BPH, particularly when combined with rice variety mixture strategies
