Abstract

Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) is a major pest of maize and is frequently used as a test insect in laboratory studies. The success of laboratory rearing and mass production of this insect depends on the quality of the diet provided. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different artificial diet ingredients on the development and survival of S. frugiperda over two generations. The study was conducted at Plant Health Laboratory 2, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” East Java, from February to December 2025. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments and four replications was used. The treatments consisted of P1 (baby corn), P2 (corn flour), P3 (red bean flour), P4 (mung bean flour), and P5 (soybean flour). Observed parameters included developmental duration, larval survival, sex ratio, pupal length, pupal weight, morphological characteristics, and feed residue weight. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey’s HSD or Games–Howell tests at the 5% significance level. The results showed that artificial diet ingredients significantly affected the development and biological performance of S. frugiperda. Treatment P1 resulted in the shortest developmental period, whereas P5 produced the best performance in larval survival, sex ratio, pupal length, pupal weight, and feed utilization efficiency. In contrast, P4 showed the poorest performance and failed to support optimal development in the second generation. Therefore, soybean flour-based diet has the potential to serve as an effective alternative diet for laboratory rearing of S. frugiperda. Keywords: Spodoptera frugiperda, artificial diet, soybean flour, development, survival
