Abstract

Corcyra cephalonica is one of the major storage pests that can reduce the quality and quantity of rice during storage. The continuous use of synthetic pesticides may lead to pest resistance and cause adverse effects on the environment and human health. Therefore, safer and more environmentally friendly alternatives, such as botanical pesticides, are needed. This study aimed to evaluate the repellency of citronella grass (Cymbopogon nardus) leaf powder and pandan leaf (Pandanus amaryllifolius) powder, as well as their effects on larval mortality, pupal formation, and adult emergence of C. cephalonica. The research was conducted at Plant Health Laboratory 2, Faculty of Agriculture, UPN “Veteran” East Java, from June to November 2025. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was employed using citronella leaf powder, pandan leaf powder, and their mixture at doses of 25 g, 30 g, and 35 g per 100 g of rice. The observed parameters included repellency percentage, larval mortality, pupal percentage, and adult emergence percentage. The results showed that all treatments were not effective as repellents against C. cephalonica larvae, with the highest repellency value of 11.11% recorded in the pandan leaf powder treatment at a dose of 25 g. However, the treatments significantly affected larval mortality, pupal formation, and adult emergence. The highest larval mortality (42.22%) was observed in the citronella leaf powder treatment at a dose of 30 g, while the lowest pupal percentage (48.89%) was obtained from the same treatment. The lowest adult emergence percentage (20.00%) was recorded in the pandan leaf powder treatment at a dose of 25 g. Citronella and pandan leaf powders have the potential to serve as botanical pesticides for suppressing the development of C. cephalonica, although their repellent activity remains relatively low.
