Abstract

The development of natural-based flocculants is required as an alternative to synthetic flocculants that may cause environmental pollution. This study aimed to produce a bioflocculant from tamarind seed starch and to investigate the effects of NaOH concentration and soaking time on the starch content obtained. The bioflocculant was subsequently applied to tofu industry wastewater to evaluate its effectiveness in reducing pollutant parameters. The research method involved starch isolation from tamarind seeds and a flocculation process in wastewater treatment. Starch isolation was conducted through deproteinization using NaOH solutions with concentrations of 0.04, 0.1, 0.16, 0.22, and 0.28% and soaking times of 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 h, followed by demineralization using 0.04% HCl for 1 h. The results showed that the optimum condition was achieved at 0.04% NaOH concentration and a soaking time of 3 h, yielding the highest starch content of 21.3135%. The application of the bioflocculant reduced pH by 20.86%, BOD by 6.97%, COD by 57.77%, and TSS by 11.05%. The conclusion showed that increasing the NaOH concentration tended to decrease the starch content, while increasing the soaking time tended to increase the starch content obtained. Keywords: bioflocculant, deproteination, tamarind seeds, tofu industry wastewater
