Abstract

The preliminary design of an activated carbon plant using palm kernel shells as the raw material and a thermal activation process is planned with a production capacity of 32,000 tons per year. The final product is activated carbon powder with a particle size of 325 mesh. The establishment of this plant is expected to contribute to meeting the increasing domestic demand for activated carbon. The successful operation of the plant depends not only on the application of modern processing equipment and the production of high-quality products, but also on appropriate production management, process control, operational systems, and marketing strategies. The plant is planned to be constructed in the Kemingking Industrial Estate, Muaro Jambi Regency, Jambi Province. This location was selected because of its accessibility to toll roads and its suitability for large trucks and trailers, which will facilitate the transportation of raw materials and product distribution. The plant will be operated continuously for 330 days per year and 24 hours per day, with a total workforce of 198 employees. The company will be established as a limited liability company with a line-and-staff organizational structure. The total capital investment required for the plant is IDR 969,502,994,600, consisting of a fixed capital investment of IDR 794,510,149,515 and a working capital investment of IDR 174,992,845,085. The annual raw material cost is estimated at IDR 151,977,375,418, while the annual utility cost and total production cost are IDR 243,988,067,872 and IDR 699,971,380,339, respectively. The annual product sales revenue is projected to reach IDR 973,590,400,000. Based on the economic evaluation, the return on investment is 24.66% before tax and 18.50% after tax. The payback period is estimated at 4 years and 2 months, with an internal rate of return of 15.04% and a break-even point of 29.27%. Considering the bank interest rate of 8% per year, these economic indicators demonstrate that the proposed activated carbon plant is technically and economically feasible for further development. Keywords: activated carbon, palm kernel shell, thermal activation, plant design, economic analysis
