Abstract
Natural zeolites in Indonesia often face challenges such as high impurity content and low crystallinity, which restrict their performance in advanced industrial applications. Consequently, the development of synthetic zeolites, particularly Zeolite A, is essential to obtain materials with high purity and controlled porosity. This study investigates the synthesis of Zeolite A from Bangka kaolin via a hydrothermal method to evaluate the influence of calcination temperature and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration on the resulting adsorbent properties. The process involved activating kaolin into reactive metakaolin through calcination at temperatures of 500–900°C for 2 hours. The synthesis was performed at 110°C for 6 hours with NaOH concentrations ranging from 1 M to 5 M, preceded by a 72-hour aging period. Characterization using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) demonstrated that the synthesized products achieved Si/Al molar ratios between 0.91 and 1.83, with an optimal ratio of 1.07 obtained at a calcination temperature of 700°C and 2 M NaOH concentration. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the successful formation of the NaA zeolite phase within a semi-crystalline framework. Furthermore, Surface Area Analyzer (SAA) results showed a specific surface area of 6.051 m2/g and an average pore diameter of 11.76 nm.
