Abstract

The growing demand for calcium chloride as a raw material in the water treatment industry, the food industry, oil and gas drilling, humidity control (as a desiccant), and various other chemical industries has driven the need to build a calcium chloride plant in Indonesia. To date, Indonesia’s demand for calcium chloride is still met through imports, as there are currently no domestic plants producing it on a commercial scale. Therefore, this preliminary design proposes a calcium chloride plant using hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate as feedstocks, with a capacity of 85,000 metric tons per year, employing a neutralization process. The production process consists of the raw material preparation stage, the calcium chloride formation reaction, and product purification. The main reaction takes place in an acid reactor under operating conditions of 32°C and 1 atm pressure, followed by a neutralization process using a 20% Ca(OH)₂ solution at 40°C and 1 atm pressure. The reaction solution is separated using a rotary drum vacuum filter, then concentrated in an evaporator, crystallized in a crystallizer, separated by a centrifuge, dried in a rotary dryer, and cooled using a cooling conveyor to obtain CaCl₂·2H₂O that meets specifications. Preliminary design results indicate that the neutralization process is feasible because it has relatively simple operating conditions, high conversion rates, abundant domestic raw material supplies, and produces a high-purity product. The plant is planned to be located in the Tuban Industrial Park (KIT), Jenu Subdistrict, Tuban Regency, East Java Province, due to the availability of raw materials, utilities, transportation, and labor. Based on the results of the economic analysis, this plant is feasible to establish because it offers a good profit margin with a payback period that meets the criteria for the chemical industry. The terms for establishing the planned plant are summarized as follows: 1. Capacity: 85,000 metric tons/year 2. Company Type: PT (Limited Liability Company) 3.
