Abstract

The accumulation of conventional plastic waste has encouraged the development of environmentally friendly bioplastics from renewable resources. This study utilized cellulose extracted from water hyacinth (*Eichhornia crassipes*) and starch from sweet corn cobs as raw materials for bioplastic production. The objectives were to evaluate the effects of the cellulose-to-starch ratio and glycerol content on the properties of bioplastics and to assess their compliance with the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). The results showed that increasing the cellulose content improved tensile strength but reduced elongation and water absorption, whereas higher glycerol content increased elongation, water absorption, and biodegradability while decreasing tensile strength. The highest tensile strength (9.51 MPa) was obtained at a cellulose-to-starch ratio of 1:1 with 0.5 mL glycerol, while the highest elongation (50.09%) and water absorption (48.97%) were achieved at a ratio of 0.2:1 with 1.5 mL glycerol. The maximum biodegradability reached 68%, and all bioplastic samples met the JIS requirements. The optimum composition was a 1:1 cellulose-to-starch ratio with 0.5 mL glycerol, producing balanced mechanical and physical properties.
