Abstract
Mini watermelon (Citrullus lanatus L.) is one of the most popular horticultural crops due to its sweet taste, practical fruit size, and high economic value. The productivity and quality of mini watermelon fruit are influenced by nutrient availability and suitable planting media conditions that support plant growth. This study aimed to determine the effects of different types of Nitrogen (N) fertilizers and planting media compositions on the growth and yield of mini watermelon. The research was conducted in Semambung Village, Gedangan District, Sidoarjo Regency, Indonesia, in 2026 using a field experimental design. The treatments consisted of four types of Nitrogen fertilizers (Urea, ZA, NPK, and KNO₃) and several planting media compositions consisting of soil, rice husk charcoal, manure, and compost in different proportions. The results showed that the interaction between the types of Nitrogen fertilizer and the planting media composition had significant to highly significant effects on vegetative growth parameters, including plant length, number of leaves, and stem diameter, as well as yield parameters, namely fruit diameter and flesh thickness. The combination of Urea or ZA fertilizer with a soil husk charcoal:manure medium ratio of (1:0.75:0.25:0.25) produced the best results for most parameters. In addition, the single factor of Nitrogen fertilizer type significantly affected fruit sweetness, with the KNO₃ treatment producing the highest sweetness value.
