Abstract
Tuban Regency is a strategic area on the western tip of East Java Province, known as a religious tourism destination as well as a hub for the cement, oil, and gas industries, resulting in consistently high traffic volumes on its main roads with the potential to increase carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. This study aims to analyze traffic volume, estimate the CO₂ emission load, examine the correlation between vehicle volume and CO₂ emissions, and map the spatial distribution of these emissions along Jalan Pahlawan to Jalan Pemuda in the center of Tuban Regency. Primary data were collected through traffic counting surveis and CO₂ concentration measurements using a CO₂ detector at 17 observation points spread across five road segmens, during the morning (06.30–08.30 WIB) and afternoon (16.00–18.00 WIB) peak hours. Traffic volume was converted into passenger car units (pcu/hour) based on the 1997 Indonesian Highway Capacity Manual (MKJI), while CO₂ emissions were calculated following the 2006 IPCC guidelines. The relationship between variables was analyzed using regression, correlation coefficient, and coefficient of determination, while the spatial distribution was visualized through a Geographic Information System (GIS) using ArcGIS 10.8 software. The results show that the highest traffic volume occurred on Segmen II of Jalan Basuki Rahmat at 07.15–07.30 WIB, reaching 2,712.2 pcu/hour, with the average traffic volume across all study locations ranging from 528.7 to 2,417.2 pcu/hour. The average CO₂ emissions generated ranged from 1,453.7 to 1,680.6 kg/hour. Regression analysis produced an exponential model with the equation Y = 1348.7e^0.0004X and a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.1519, with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.390, which is classified as a low-level relationship. Traffic volume contributed 15.19% to the magnitude of CO₂ emissions, while the remainder was influenced by other factors outside the model. The resulting thematic maps display the distribution of traffic volume and CO₂ emissions along the study area, and the measured emission levels remained below the human comfort threshold (1,000–2,000 ppm). The findings of this study are expected to serve as a scientific basis for the Tuban Regency Government in formulating mitigation policies, such as traffic management and the addition of Green Open Spaces (RTH) in strategic areas.
