Abstract

Composite materials are formed by combining two or more different raw materials to produce enhanced mechanical and physicochemical properties. Ca–Mg–NH₄–PO₄ composites were synthesized from dolomite using phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) as the leaching agent and ammonium hydroxide (NH₄OH) as the precipitating agent. This study investigated the effects of phosphoric acid volume and precipitation pH on the yield and characteristics of the synthesized composites. A total of 25 experiments were conducted by varying the phosphoric acid volume and pH. The synthesis involved dissolving dolomite in phosphoric acid, filtering the solution, precipitating the filtrate with ammonium hydroxide to the desired pH, and drying the resulting precipitate at 100°C for 1 h. The obtained composites were characterized using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that phosphoric acid volume and precipitation pH had a fluctuating effect on the product yield, which ranged from 24.15% to 147.05%. XRF analysis confirmed the presence of CaO, MgO, and P₂O₅, while SEM revealed particle sizes ranging from 579 nm to 4.32 μm. EDX analysis verified the presence of Ca, Mg, N, P, and O elements in the composites. XRD analysis identified the formation of orthorhombic struvite and monoclinic brushite crystalline phases.
