Abstract

The increasing demand for calcium chloride as a raw material in water treatment, food processing, oil and gas drilling, moisture control (desiccant) applications, and various other chemical industries has created the need for the establishment of a calcium chloride manufacturing plant in Indonesia. At present, Indonesia's calcium chloride demand is still largely met through imports because no domestic plant produces it on a commercial scale. Therefore, this preliminary plant design proposes the production of calcium chloride from hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate with a production capacity of 85,000 tons per year using a neutralization process. The production process consists of raw material preparation, calcium chloride formation, and product purification stages. The main reaction takes place in an acid reactor operating at 32°C and 1 atm, followed by a neutralization process using a 20 wt% Ca(OH)₂ solution at 40°C and 1 atm. The resulting reaction slurry is separated using a rotary drum vacuum filter, concentrated in an evaporator, crystallized in a crystallizer, separated in a centrifuge, dried in a rotary dryer, and finally cooled using a cooling conveyor to obtain CaCl₂·2H₂O product that meets the required specifications. The preliminary design results indicate that the neutralization process is feasible for industrial implementation because it operates under relatively simple conditions, achieves high conversion, utilizes abundant domestic raw materials, and produces a product with high commercial value. The proposed plant location is in the Tuban Industrial Area (KIT), Jenu District, Tuban Regency, East Java Province, due to the availability of raw materials, utilities, transportation infrastructure, and labor resources. Based on the economic analysis, the plant is considered economically viable because it provides an attractive profit level and a capital payback period that satisfies the criteria commonly applied in the chemical industry
