Abstract

The methyl acetate plant is designed with a production capacity of 50,000 tons/year, using acetic acid and methanol as raw materials through a homogeneous esterification process using sulfuric acid as the catalyst. The establishment of this plant is motivated by the increasing demand for methyl acetate in Indonesia, which is still dependent on imports. Therefore, the plant's construction is expected to meet domestic demand, reduce dependence on imports, and increase the added value of the national chemical industry. The production process begins with raw material storage. The methanol is then evaporated using a vaporizer and separated in a flash drum before being fed to the reactive distillation column. The acetic acid and catalyst are preheated before entering the reactive distillation column. The esterification reaction takes place at a temperature of around 70°C and a pressure of 1 atm, with a conversion rate of 99%. The top product, methyl acetate, is purified and stored as the final product, while the bottom stream is further processed in a second distillation column to recover methanol before being fed to the waste treatment unit. The plant is planned to be located in the Karanganyar Industrial Estate, Central Java, considering its proximity to raw material sources, easy transportation access, availability of utilities, and ease of product distribution. The utility system includes the provision of water, steam, electricity, and fuel, while safety aspects are supported by an automated instrumentation system and the implementation of occupational safety standards across all process units.
