Abstract
The development of a flocculant based on natural ingredients is needed as an alternative to synthetic flocculants that have the potential to pollute the environment. This study aimed to create a bioflocculant from tamarind seed starch and to examine the effect of NaOH concentration and soaking time on the resulting starch content. The bioflocculant was then applied to tofu industry wastewater to evaluate its effectiveness in reducing pollutant parameters. The research methods included the isolation of tamarind seed starch and the flocculation process in wastewater treatment. Starch isolation was carried out through a deproteinization stage using NaOH solutions with varying concentrations of 0.04, 0.1, 0.16, 0.22, and 0.28% and soaking times of 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 hours, followed by a demineralization stage using a 0.04% HCl solution for 1 hour. The results showed that optimum conditions were achieved at a NaOH concentration of 0.04% and a soaking time of 3 hours, with the highest starch content of 21.3135%. The application of bioflocculant was able to reduce the pollutant parameters of tofu industrial wastewater, namely pH by 20.86%, BOD by 6.97%, COD by 57.77%, and TSS by 11.05%. The study concluded that increasing the NaOH concentration tended to decrease the starch content, while increasing the soaking time tended to increase the starch content.
