Abstract
Acetylene waste (carbide sludge), which contains a high concentration of calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)₂], poses an environmental concern due to its alkaline nature. This study aimed to synthesize high-quality Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) from acetylene waste through a precipitation process using sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃). The effects of Na₂CO₃ concentration (0.1–0.5 N) and reaction time (15–75 min) on the characteristics of the produced PCC were investigated. The process involved dissolving the waste with 1.5 N HCl, followed by precipitation at 30°C, pH 11–12, and a stirring speed of 400 rpm. The results showed that increasing Na₂CO₃ concentration and reaction time significantly enhanced PCC yield, with the highest mass of 9.9107 g obtained at 0.5 N and 75 min. XRD analysis confirmed calcite as the dominant crystalline phase, while SEM revealed rhombohedral and spherical particle morphologies with submicron sizes (0.4–0.6 μm). EDX analysis indicated a maximum PCC purity of 99.64%, meeting the SNI/ISO 3262-2:1998 standard. These findings demonstrate that acetylene waste can be effectively utilized as an alternative raw material for producing high-purity PCC suitable for industrial applications.
