Abstract

The accumulation of food packaging waste, particularly styrofoam, has become a significant environmental pollutant due to its degradation time of up to 500 years and its hazardous chemical content. To address this issue, biodegradable foam (biofoam) made from natural polymers such as starch and cellulose offers a sustainable and economical solution to replace conventional styrofoam. This study aims to synthesize and characterize biodegradable foam (biofoam) from cassava pulp and sugarcane bagasse cellulose as an environmentally friendly alternative to styrofoam. The biofoam was synthesized using cassava pulp, cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and glycerol, with varying starch-to-cellulose ratios (1:0.2 to 1:1) and mixing times (5 to 30 minutes) using a thermopressing machine at 150°C. Characterization tests included tensile strength, water absorption, biodegradability, FTIR, and SEM. The results showed that a 1:1 ratio with a mixing time of 30 minutes yielded the best properties: water absorption of 10.4575%, biodegradability of 41% within 30 days, and tensile strength of 5.4916 MPa. Water absorption and biodegradability met the standards of SNI 7188.7:2016 and ASTM D5988. Although the tensile strength (5.4916 MPa) exceeded that of commercial styrofoam, it did not meet the SNI requirement of 29.16 MPa. FTIR confirmed the presence of hydroxyl, aliphatic, and carbonyl groups. SEM revealed agglomeration and voids on the surface due to incomplete homogenization and starch gelatinization.
