Abstract
Peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.) are a strategic food commodity in Indonesia, with a harvested area of 479,000 ha and an annual production of 549,000 tons of dry beans. Peanut productivity is often hampered by insect pests, particularly the aphid Aphis craccivora Koch and the whitefly Bemisia tabaci Gennadius, which can reduce yields by 30–50%. Zinnia elegans Jacq. refugia plants are a component of ecological engineering in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) that have the potential to increase the diversity of natural enemies by providing nectar, pollen, and microhabitat sources for entomophagous insects. This study aims to examine the effect of Zinnia elegans refugia plants on the diversity of phytophagous and entomophagous insects in peanut plantations. Diversity analysis was conducted quantitatively based on alpha diversity principles, including the Shannon-Wiener Index (H'), Margalef Richness Index (Dmg), Pielou Evenness Index (J'), Simpson Dominance Index (D), and Bray-Curtis Similarity Index. Insect observations were conducted throughout the growing season using insect nets and direct visual observation, with two main treatments: (T1) peanut plantations without refugia and (T2) peanut plantations with Z. elegans refugia. The results showed that 23 insect species were found, divided into four functional groups: phytophages (10 species), predators (7 species), parasitoids (3 species), and pollinators (3 species). The total number of individuals in the plots without refugia was 239 individuals, while in the plots with Z. elegans refugia it was 294 individuals (+23.0%). The Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H') significantly increased from 2.1829 to 2.2778, and the Pielou Evenness Index (J') increased from 0.6962 to 0.7264. Z. elegans refugia increased the population of entomophages (+29.2%) proportionally more than phytophages (+21.4%), with the highest increase in the Hymenoptera parasitoid group (+41.7%). The Bray-Curtis Similarity Index of 89.68% indicates that the two communities have very similar species composition but differ in relative abundance. It was concluded that planting Zinnia elegans refugia around peanut plantations statistically significantly increased the diversity and evenness of the insect community, as well as improving the functional balance between phytophagous and entomophagous insects. Z. elegans refugia are recommended as an effective, economical, and environmentally friendly IPM component to support natural biological control in peanut plantations.
