Abstract

The quality of used cooking oil decreases due to repeated heating processes, which are characterized by an increase in moisture content, peroxide value, and free fatty acids. This study aims to determine the optimum dosage, evaluate the effect of dosage and contact time variations, and identify the appropriate adsorption isotherm model of corn husk-derived activated carbon in the purification of used cooking oil. The adsorption method was applied using corn husk activated carbon as an adsorbent with dosage variations of 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 grams and contact time variations of 30 and 60 minutes. The analyzed parameters included moisture content, peroxide value, and free fatty acids. Data analysis was performed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherm models. The results showed that the optimum condition was obtained at an activated carbon dosage of 10 grams, achieving removal efficiencies of 97.67% for moisture content, 64% for peroxide value, and 88.44% for free fatty acids. The dosage variation significantly affected all analyzed parameters (p < 0.05), while contact time variation had no significant effect (p > 0.05). The adsorption isotherm analysis indicated that moisture content and peroxide value adsorption followed the Freundlich model, whereas free fatty acid adsorption was better described by the Langmuir model. Overall, corn husk ctivated carbon has potential as an effective adsorbent for the purification of used cooking oil.
